Key Mechanics
Meld 面子
3 consecutive or identical tiles, or 4 identical tiles grouped together, leading towards a winning hand.
Pair (Eyes) 眼
2 identical tiles grouped together, leading towards a winning hand.
Sequence 順子
A Type of Meld consisting of 3 (but not 4) consecutive tiles. Only Dots, Characters, and Bamboos can be grouped into a Sequence — Winds and Dragons do not have a numeric value and cannot form one. Formed by drawing from the wall or by Chowing.
Multiplet 刻子(廣義)
A Type of Meld consisting of three or four identical tiles. All Suits, Wind tiles, and Dragon tiles (except Flowers/Seasons) can form a Multiplet.
Triplet 刻子
A Multiplet of three identical tiles. Formed by drawing from the wall or by Pung-ing.
Quadruplet 槓子
A Multiplet of four identical tiles. Formed by drawing from the wall or by Kong-ing.
Chow / Seung 上/吃
Pick up the previous player's discard to form a Sequence with two tiles already in hand. Only allowed from your left-hand player; Pung/Kong takes priority if contested.
Pung 碰
Pick up any player's discard to form a Triplet. Skips the turns of players in between. Yields to another player who needs the tile to win.
Kong 槓
Pick up any player's discard to form a Quadruplet, then draw a replacement tile from the end of the wall. Skips turns in between; yields to a winning claim (see “Win by Robbing a Kong”).
Concealed Kong 暗槓 (Um Gong)
Self-draw the fourth tile of a kind already in hand, slide the Quadruplet face-up, then draw a replacement tile.
Supplementary Kong 補槓 (Bo Gong)
After already Pung-ing a Triplet, draw the fourth tile of its kind and add it to the exposed Triplet, then draw a replacement tile.
